Office Hours - October 1

With all the parents and guardians and friends and surprise guests around, Zoe figured she'd better be in her office, to field any concerns and answer any questions (hopefully not about certain teachers). She wasn't sure what kind of questions people might have, but that was half the fun of this weekend, really.

"I'm Neal Caffrey's... case officer, I suppose." He gave her a rueful smile. "I wanted to check to see how he's settling into teaching here." And if he'd been committing any felonies on the side.

"This is a very...unique place, filled with lots of different kinds of people," Zoe explained. "It makes it easier for people who might not fit in at home to find a place where they're comfortable."

"He's been settling in very well," Zoe said with a smile. "The students seem to enjoy his classes, and I think he's got a few who he's really taken under his wing."

That was a good thing, right?

"I bet," Peter muttered, grimacing. "He hasn't been... encouraging any of them to put things into practice in real life, that you've noticed? Because that would definitely break his parole."

He supposed that Tyrion would fall in that category. "You don't look like you didn't fit in back home," he remarked.

"Oh, no, of course not," Zoe said, even though she didn't really know. Honestly, he could be teaching them worse skills. "He's been on excellent behavior."

"You'd be surprised," Zoe remarked. "Being a soldier on the losing side of a war doesn't make you real popular in a lot of places."

She may have mentioned the soldier part just to see if she could blow his mind a little more. Wench, really.

"That's something, anyway. I did meet one of his students-- Kenzi?" Peter wanted to double-check this. "No forgeries yet? Nothing major?"

"You're one of those fighting wenches?" Jaime was happy to confirm the wench part, yes. "But no, it rarely does. Then again, be of the right family and the new king will accept you right back, giving that you give up some land. The soldiers, no one really cares about those."

"Yes, Kenzi seems to be enjoying his classes very much. Perhaps because he's so handsome?" That was totally the reason, clearly. "I assure you, he hasn't done anything suspicious under my watch."

Oh look, Zoe was scowling all over again. "That's not quite how it worked where I come from, except for the part about no one really caring about soldiers. I suppose that and officers from the 'right families' are universal."

"We can hope," Peter said, with a small smile. Well, at least Neal wasn't leaving any big messes for him to clean up. "I appreciate your time, ma'am. You have a... very interesting school, here."

But she scowled so well, it would be a shame not to give her reason to.

"I've seen it. I just happen to be of the right family and we were on the right side," Jaime said, failing to mention they only changed their sides at the very end.

"No. But if you have a thousand lives you can lead you tend to take more risks," Layla replied. "Plus he's a major attention whore and finds that negative attention is more recognizable than positive."

See? Knows stuff.

"So, what, if I give him positive attention he'll stop making my life hell?" Not only did that not make sense, but Zoe wasn't sure if she could pull it off, as useful as that knowledge could be.

"Well, now I'm on the right side as well, and in the right position due to working my way up to it," Zoe said. "That way seems a bit more fair."

"Interesting's a good way of putting it," Zoe said with a grin. "I don't think any of the staff would have it any other way, to be honest."

"Nah," she said after a moment's pause. "You're pretty much screwed."

"Oh, well, that's reassuring," Zoe said dryly. "I suppose it's nice to know that it isn't just us he drives crazy."

"Oh, you have no idea," Layla replied. "He's... not exactly everyone's favorite person back home."

"So, you're not dying to get him home?" That would be her disappointed voice.

Not getting caught was a valuable skill. Unacceptable displays of rebellion aside, he wouldn't have been half as mad at Lex if he hadn't got caught out. "Glad to hear it. I must say this is a fascinating school." Lionel let his hand linger just long enough to be noticeable before pulling back. "With an equally fascinating staff."

Zoe was willing to let Lionel charm her for now, since he was rather good at it. "I'm glad you think so. Some parents aren't quite so pleased about the fascinating bits."

And Lionel was going to keep on charming her, because that was what you did with beautiful, intelligent, and powerful women. "Then they're fools not to see the opportunities presented to their children."

Bran hadn't originally intended to visit the dean, but after speaking with Mercy's teachers he thought it important. He doubted it would change anything, if the kind of behavior certain teachers were exhibiting hadn't been dealt with by now then they wouldn't be.

At least this way he can say he went through proper channels first. Knocking on the door, Bran stuck his head in.

"Principal Winchester? I'm Bran Cornick, a family friend of Mercy Thompson. I was wondering if you have a moment?"
