Office Hours - October 25

Zoe had put in an appearance at the picnic yesterday, but she figured that anyone who wanted to speak to her in an official capacity would come by her office. Since John had gotten to have Grace with him yesterday, she had Grace today, and was currently splitting her time between paperwork, and watching Grace play with her blocks.

Thanks to Hoshi's attention to detail, Jon had a data PADD with a list of Hoshi's courses, her grades from a year in Fandom, and a list of all her teachers. While it all looked very good, he still had some questions about the school in general. That brought him knocking on the door of the principal's office.

Zoe glanced up and gave the man a polite smile. "Hi there. Can I help you?"

"I hope so. I'm Captain Jonathon Archer and I was sent to evaluate one of your students, Hoshi Sato, for admission to one of our training programs. Are you Principal Winchester?" he asked, checking his notes.

"I am. It's a pleasure to meet you," Zoe said, unable to stop herself from sitting a little more formally.

"Likewise," said Jon. He looked around the office and chuckled a bit. "You'll have to forgive me, but I'm feeling a little bit of déjà vu. The last time I was in a principal's office was when I was Hoshi's age. I got caught passing notes to a girl in study hall and got sent to the principal for a lecture on my behavior."

Zoe laughed softly. "Well, I assure you that I've had no such trouble with Hoshi, or any at all. She's a very good student. I assume she's told you she's running one of our school clubs as well?"

"She mentioned that she was in a self-defense club, but she didn't mention that she was running anything," said Jon, adding this new information to his notes. "From what everyone tells me, she's pretty remarkable and she's better with languages than anyone I've come across."

"Would that be of use to you? Her skill with languages?" Zoe asked.

"Definitely. My other candidates for communications officers are older, but are nowhere near her ability," said Jon. "However, all the other candidates have gone through Starfleet officer training and graduated with flying colors. Not only is Hoshi younger, but her education has been a bit different from our usual officer candidates. She was home-schooled before coming here and, frankly, the recommendation of her parents did not work for my superiors."

"If it's a matter of getting an official recommendation, I'm sure we can get one written up for her," Zoe offered. "I'd hate for something like that to stand in her way."

"That would be very helpful," said Jonathon, smiling. "I know Hoshi will make a great officer one day. I'd just like to get her on my ship instead of one of the later ones."

"I'll be sure that gets to you then," Zoe said. "Anything that will get our students into good positions for the future is something I want to do."

Like Benicio wasn't going to visit the principal's office to see how many times Savannah had been sent there? He did know her after all.

Zoe looked up when she heard someone coming by, and smiled politely. "Hello. Can I help you?" she asked.

Benicio gave her a charming smile. "I'm Benicio Cortez. Savannah Levine is my granddaughter and Eve is my ward."

"Oh, hello. I'm Zoe Winchester, the principal here. But I assume you knew that," she said. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"It's my pleasure, Mrs. Winchester. Savannah has told me a great deal about you and this school."

"I hope it's all been good things?" Zoe said. "Not that I would imagine much else coming from Savannah."

He smiled.

"All very good things, I assure you. I have to have respect for a woman who will take up arms to defend a school full of students."

"I wish I didn't have to take such severe measures to defend the students," Zoe said quickly. "They do a good job of taking care of themselves as well."

"Enough that you wish they would stay somewhere safe and when they don't you want to strangle them?"

Oh yes, he knew Savannah and her mother quite well.

Zoe laughed. "You sound like you have experience," she said. "I do wish sometimes that the students weren't quite so headstrong."

"I know Savannah and her mother," Benicio smiled. "They seem to feel secure in themselves here, Mrs. Winchester. They may be headstrong, but from Savannah's letters, you will have a small army at your back if they think you need them -- whether you think you do or not."
