The Principal's Tower, Early Monday Afternoon

Zoe was sure there was probably a better way to spend New Year's Day than to just stay in bed with John. But she was having a little trouble thinking of what that better way might be at the moment. Funny how that worked.

John chuckled, watching his hand as he idly traced his fingers along Zoe's arm. "I'm trying to figure out if I'm actually feeling guilty. Or just feeling guilty that I'm not feeling guilty."

"Why do you feel guilty? Besides not being guilty?" Zoe asked, laughing lightly.

"This is the first New Year's Day in... I can't tell you how many years where I haven't been involved in some kind of hunt," John said. "Or at least researching the next hunt."

"You shouldn't feel guilty for that. You've been hunting for a long time, so you've had this break coming for a while. And I'm sure that if something comes along that needs to be researched, you'll know."

"Yeah. Hence the not sure I'm feeling guilty. Because definitely my place is here this year." He grinned at her, hand sliding over her skin lightly again.

Zoe smiled and put her hand over his. "I agree. I definitely prefer having you here."

John lifted her hand and pressed a kiss into the palm. "Definitely a much nicer way to see in the new year than being chest deep in a grave somewhere digging up some ghost's bones."

"I'd like to think that I make preferable company to ghosts," Zoe replied, shifting a little closer to him. "Especially since grave digging at this time of year doesn't sound like the warmest activity."

"It's pretty much a southern states hunting time," John said with a small smile.

"I suppose that's a perk to taking up hunting as a profession - you can follow the good weather if you really want to."

"Just a small perk," John agreed. "Though it seemed at least once every winter I'd end up heading right into the teeth of a blizzard."

Zoe gave John a curious glance. "Were you usually by yourself, or did you have the boys with you?"

"If they weren't with me, they were somewhere nearby, waiting for me."

"I don't know whether to be annoyed at you for putting all three of you in danger, or be glad that at least you weren't being brave enough to try to weather a blizzard on your own."

"It wasn't like I was dragging the boys up Mount Everest," John protested mildly. "And if things got really bad, we'd find a motel and wait it out." He smiled slightly. "I may be obsessed, but I'm not crazy."

Zoe relaxed a little at knowing all of that. "I know. But from my experience, there's an awfully fine line between obsessed and crazy."

John nodded. "There is at that. And I can't say I haven't danced along it more than once. But my boys always kept me on the right side of it. If only barely sometimes."

"Well, now you've got three people to keep you on the good side of the line," she pointed out.

"Will be four in a few months," John said, smiling and sliding a hand down to rest against her stomach. "More luck than I deserve."

"You know that's not true," Zoe said mildly. "I think it's exactly as much luck as you deserve."

John was far too content to argue the point. "More than I expected, then."

Zoe smiled and put her hand over John's again, holding it against her stomach. "We're going to have to start thinking about names. And other things too, I think."

"Yes," John agreed. "Probably going to be a list of scary length before we're done."

"I imagine it will be. And I have sort of a related question," Zoe said cautiously. "How attached are you to your living space in town?"

"It's a nice enough, defensible house," John replied. "And most of the housemates are good people. But I'm not planning on signing a lifetime lease or anything."

Zoe nodded. "I was thinking that with everything going on, maybe we should...I don't know. You spend enough time here as it is, and it just seems like maybe we should be living in the same place."

John smiled slowly at her. "You're asking me to move in."

"I'm asking you to move in," she replied.

John nodded. "Okay."

"I know the space isn't that big," Zoe continued, "but--wait, was that a yes?"

"It's not every day a beautiful woman who also happens to be carrying my child asks me to move in with her." He grinned at her. "I'd be a fool to say no."

"You certainly would be," she said, but her tone was entirely humorous, and she started laughing. "I think that'll work out well, for both of us."

"So do I." John chuckled. "If nothing else, I won't have to worry about Vader's breathing keeping me awake if he comes back or being accosted by an overly enthusiastic dodo."

Zoe couldn't help but laugh a little more at that. "I promise, you won't have to worry about being accosted. Unless you want to be, of course."

"Y'know, I don't think I'd mind if you got over enthusiastic," John said invitingly.

"Oh really?" Zoe said with fake curiosity. "I'll have to keep that in mind then."

"You do that. In the meantime," John shifted them both, rolling Zoe beneath him, "I'll just have to be enthusiastic myself."

Zoe was more than happy to let herself be shifted like that. "I do so enjoy your enthusiasm. And I'll get to enjoy it even more now."
