It had taken some time to get everything settled. Between the actual process of buying the house, and making sure that everything passed the general inspection, and making sure that everything passed John's more stringent inspection, Zoe had to wonder if everything would be done before Xander was tired of dealing with them or the hotel threw them out. But all of John and Zoe's plans had finally fallen into place, and their house was officially ready to be moved in to.

Moving was about as hard as Zoe imagined it would be, but luckily, Sam wasn't on the camping trip, so he'd been enlisted to help, on the condition that he could bring his dog and Dean's cat along, to keep an eye on them during the day. This really was turning into one of the most domestic events Zoe could remember having in a long time.

John looked at the number of large pieces of furniture that had been delivered the day before but that still needed to be decided where they should go. "I seem to have blocked out all this part when I remember getting the house in Lawrence with Mary."

"Which part? Figuring out where we're going to put everything or having to actually move things?" Zoe asked.

"Yes."

Zoe did her best to not laugh too hard. "Well, you didn't have a tall, strong teenage son to help you move everything before," she said. "And I'll be more than happy to direct the furniture to where I think it should go."

"Yes, Mary was too," John said dryly. He had noted that it was seemingly easier to talk about his wife in the last month or so without the same lump in his throat cutting off his words. There was still an ache there and always would be, but it wasn't blocking him remembering the good things as much anymore.

Zoe had noticed that John was more willing to mention Mary these days, and she didn't think that was a bad thing at all. If nothing else, it gave her hope that some day, she'd be able to talk about Wash as freely.

"That must be a female thing then," she said, not sounding at all bothered by that.

"Or a pregnancy thing," John said. "It was a few months before Dean was born that we got the house. Although I guess that would still make it a female thing."

"I think as a guideline, the nesting process does not involve heavy lifting," Zoe said.

"Oh on that I disagree. It always seems to involve heavy lifting. It just happens that I'm always the one doing it."

"And for that, I am extraordinarily grateful," Zoe replied, leaning in to give him a kiss.

Of course, Sam chose that moment to come into the room, and when he saw Zoe and his dad, he immediately turned to go back to where he'd come from.

John pulled back from the kiss long enough to throw out a hand and say, "Stop right where you are."

"I don't want to interrupt the two of you," Sam insisted, freezing nonetheless.

"You're not." John turned to face him. "Zoe was just about to start directing the heavy lifting. Which you get to help with."

"That didn't look like planning out heavy lifting to me," he said, smirking as he went over. "So, what are we starting with?"

"You should probably start with the heaviest things, just to get that over with," Zoe suggested.

John shook his head. "We start with the things you're sure of where you want them. Trust me. It'll be less work in the long run."

"All right, I'll defer to your expert experience here," Zoe said. "Maybe we should start in the dining room then? There's not a lot of question about where everything goes in there."

John nodded. "Sounds good to me."

Sam wasn't about to start arguing with either one of them, so he nodded as well and followed them into the dining room.

Zoe followed as well, pointing to the table that they had picked out. "If you guys can get the table into the center of the room, I'll get the chairs arranged."

"Don't overdo it," John warned as he went to grab the table with Sam.

"I'm not overdoing anything. We've only just started," Zoe insisted.

"Just keep in mind that we've a lot to do after this."

"And when I feel like I'm overdoing things, I'll make you and Sam do more," she replied.
