When Zoe woke up, she wasn't sure what she should do first - get out of the sheets that were all tangled up, or get away from John. She didn't want him to wake up and think she was trying to cuddle him or anything, after all. She scooted away from him a little, and stared to see if that would make him wake up. She had other ways to get him out of the bed if she needed to.

Someone was staring at him. John laid there with his eyes closed pretending to be asleep, as he wondered if it was the boogeyman. Eventually he decided if it was, then he'd just punch it in the nose so he opened his eyes and sprang up into a sitting position with his fist cocked.

Only to see Zoe.

"Oh, it's you."

"Of course it's me," Zoe said, eying him. "Were you going to hit me?"

"I thought you were the boogeyman," John explained. Easy mistake to make, after all.

"There's no boogeymen here," Zoe said. "And if there were, I'd protect you, so don't worry."

"You're a girl," John pointed out in case she had forgot. Which she must've if she thought she could face down the boogeyman.

"I can kick your butt," Zoe insisted. "That means I could fight a boogeyman too."

"You can't kick my butt!"

"I can too!" she said.

Zoe did the only thing she could think of and leaned over to try to punch John on the arm. "Can!"

"Can't!" John said, pushing her fist away.

"Well...you can't kick my butt either!" Zoe said loudly.

"I could if I wanted to, but I'm not s'posed to hit girls," John informed her.

Zoe rolled her eyes. "That's stupid. What if I tried to beat you up? Then you wouldn't be able to fight back, and you should always be able to fight back if someone's gonna hurt you." Really, John was so lucky to have her around to tell him these things.
