16 Unicorn Street, Early Tuesday Afternoon

With new students on the way, Zoe's piles of paperwork were growing exponentially. Even so, she'd decided to work from home today, and was splitting her time between organizing student records, and watching Grace play with her new blocks. One of these things was infinitely more entertaining than the other.

John came down from upstairs, carrying a duffle bag. "Zoe?"

"Yeah?" Zoe replied, making sure her place was marked before turning around. "What's that for?" she asked, pointing to the bag.

"You remember me telling you about Daniel Elkins?"

"He's a hunter, right? One of your many ex-friends," she said with a gently teasing tone.

"He was killed two nights ago in what's being reported as a home invasion."

That sobered Zoe up rather quickly. "I'm sorry. Do you...do you think it was really a home invasion?"

"I think something invaded but I would be very surprised if it was human," John said. "Daniel was too good for some wannabe thugs to get the drop on him."

Zoe sighed, and nodded. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to Colorado, check it out." John paused. "Not just to see what happened to Daniel, but he was the one who told me about the colt way back when in the first place. There might be something there that can lead me to it."

"Do you want help?" Zoe asked. "The boys can take care of Grace, and I trust Harriet and Aly to run things while we're gone."

John smiled. "Much as I would love to have your company, I can't keep dragging the principal away from the school whenever something comes up. This is mostly just a recon so I should be fine alone."

"You're not taking the boys then either?" Zoe asked. She wasn't sure whether that made her feel better or not.

John shook his head. "Like I said, it's mostly recon. Not worth pulling them from their classes."

Zoe nodded, and stood up, moving to wrap her arms around John. "You're going to be careful? And be safe?"

"I'll be careful," John promised, wrapping his arms around her in return. "I've got a lot to come back to."

"Damn straight you do," Zoe said, leaning up to give him a kiss. "Promise me you'll call if there's trouble."
