16 Unicorn Street, Saturday Evening

It wasn't as though the Winchesters had never had a family dinner before. But a dinner for the purpose of meeting a significant other and potentially embarrassing the hell out of one of the boys was a new thing.

That didn't make the thought any less entertaining, of course.

Zoe was grateful for the new Outback in town, because that allowed takeout to be acquired - they were feeding four teenage boys after all - and all she and John had to do was wait for everyone to arrive.

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" Zoe asked, keeping an eye on Grace to make sure she was playing and not attempting to get over to any of the food.

"Good. I gave up on normal when Mary died, settled for just keeping the boys alive and safe. And now..." He gestured at Zoe and Grace, the house, the island beyond it. "Somehow I've found myself smack dab in the middle of doing normal father things like tonight. It just hits me sometimes."

"We could do this sort of thing more often, with the boys, or just with us," Zoe said.

"Depending on how much he's embarrassed, we may have to drag Sammy to future dinners kicking and screaming," John joked.

"I don't know what you're planning, but I don't intend to embarrass him at all," Zoe said.

Peter had stopped off at JGoB to get a nice chocolate cake for dessert, then had met up with Sam so they could go to Zoe and John's house together.

"Any last minute advice?" he asked Sam.

"I don't think you need advice," Sam said. "Dad already likes you, and you don't get into enough trouble for Zoe to not like you. I'm sure it'll be fine." The fact that he was worried didn't mean that Peter had to worry too.

"This is important, I want to get it right." Picking up on Sam's nerves, Peter slowed his step and tugged on Sam's sleeve. "Hey, hold up a sec."

Sam stopped at the tugging and turned to look at Peter. "I know you're going to get it right," he said, wanting to be reassuring.

"I know. I just wanted to do this." Peter leaned up to press a kiss to Sam's lips.

Alec would have just as soon stayed home, but Dean would have none of it, and Alec admitted (at least to himself) that he couldn't avoid things forever if he intended to stick around Dean for however long.

It didn't mean Alec was really gung-ho on it though, either, as evident by how he hung behind Dean as they approached the house, trying not to come up with more excuses to excuse himself for the evening.

"Come on," Dean encouraged, not blind to his double's lack of enthusiasm. "Free food. And a chance to tease Sammy all night. It's going to be fun."

"Oh yeah, it'll be great," he said, at least managing much less sarcasm than earlier in the day. "Family gatherings are totally my thing."

"Yeah, they're kinda new for the Winchesters too," Dean admitted. "Least ones like this. But, hey, that doesn't mean it's going to suck, y'know."

He shrugged. "I'm not condemning it from the get-go." He so was. "It might be kinna awkward though."

While John had been getting everyone into the house, Zoe had been setting the table, putting Sam and Peter on one side, Dean and Alec on the other, while she and John got the heads of the table, and Grace's high chair was next to her. The food was all spread out, and she was almost positive that there was enough for everyone.

Peter came in and looked around. "Is there anything I can help with?"

"I don't think so, but thank you for offering," Zoe said. "Guests don't have to help."
